The inner city districts of Stuttgart
1. February 2024

Stuttgart, the state capital of Baden-Württemberg, is one of the largest cities in Germany with a population of around 630,000 and an area of 207.4 square kilometers.
The city is divided into 23 districts.
As real estate agents, we are often asked which districts are recommended for living. As Stuttgart is divided into 23 districts, this question is not easy to answer. In addition, every customer has a different living situation and different preferences. While one person appreciates the closeness to nature and tranquillity, another likes city centre life.
To make it easier for you to decide which district might suit you, we will introduce you to the inner city districts in our first part of Stuttgart’s city districts.
Inner city districts
Of the 23 city districts, five districts are referred to as inner city districts – Stuttgart North, Stuttgart South, Stuttgart West, Stuttgart East and, of course, Stuttgart Central.
Stuttgart-Mitte Welcome to Stuttgart Mitte, the pulsating heart of the city! Here you will not only experience vibrant city life, but also a wealth of shopping opportunities along the famous Königstrasse and beyond. As the heart of the city, this district offers a vibrant urban life, characterized by lively streets, offices and stores. The attractions in this district are many and varied. From impressive sights to cultural events in first-class institutions such as the Stuttgart Opera, the State Theater and the State Gallery, which offer impressive performances and exhibitions. The Schlossplatz offers breathtaking views of both the New and Old Palace. The numerous bars, restaurants and cafés make Stuttgart Mitte one of the best districts for those who love the hustle and bustle of the city.
Stuttgart-Mitte is particularly popular with younger residents, as its central location is invaluable to them.
Stuttgart-Nord Stuttgart Nord is a particularly desirable and highly recommended residential area for families in Stuttgart. As an inner-city suburb, this district combines the advantages of green spaces and proximity to the city. The north is characterized by picturesque residential streets and proximity to nature. Noble residential areas on the Killesberg and at the Bismarck Tower give this district an exclusive touch. But it is not only the upmarket residential areas that make the north of Stuttgart attractive. The numerous green spaces, including beautiful vineyards and parks, offer a wide range of leisure activities. A popular park in the north of Stuttgart is Killesbergpark, also known as Höhenpark. What makes it so special is its tower, which stands in the middle of the park and from which you have a fantastic view of the Killesberg and the whole city. Another highlight of the Killesbergpark is the “Killesberg Bähnle”, which allows you to explore the whole park in one go. In addition to the beautiful park, there are various shopping facilities, cafés and restaurants in the Killesberg heights. Another highlight in Stuttgart North is the Weissenhofsiedlung. Every year, many thousands of architecture enthusiasts are drawn to this estate to marvel at the two houses designed by the renowned architect Le Corbusier.
The diversity of this residential area, from exclusive residential areas to rich green spaces and cultural attractions, makes Stuttgart North a first-class choice for anyone looking for a harmonious combination of nature and urban life.
Stuttgart-Süd Stuttgart-Süd is one of the most popular districts in Stuttgart, scoring particularly well with young customers such as students and young families. The residents of the south appreciate their quick connections to the city center. The district is characterized by many small cafés and restaurants, which exude a very special atmosphere and shape the district with a wide variety of cultural influences. Due to the many nations that come together in the south, the south is known for its numerous street festivals. The Africa Festival, the Heslacher Hocketse and probably the most famous city festival, the Heugsteigviertelfest, are just a few examples.
There are also beautiful small green spaces and viewpoints in the south. A popular park is the Weißenhofpark with the famous tea house and the Marble Hall. Events are regularly held in the Marble Hall. The teahouse is now a café where you can enjoy delicious drinks and food. A traffic circle was built at the highest point of the park. From this viewing platform you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views over the city. Another beautiful vantage point in the south, which is also partly located in the west of Stuttgart, is the Karlshöhe.
Marienplatz is home to many restaurants, cafés, ice cream parlors and stores. Its residents appreciate the numerous options and its proximity to the city center, which is why Marienplatz is a highly sought-after residential area. Almost no other square in Stuttgart’s city center combines as many options at the same time as Marienplatz.
Stuttgart-West Stuttgart-West, the largest inner city district, is one of Stuttgart’s most popular districts alongside Stuttgart-Süd. As one of the most densely populated residential areas in Germany, the west is known for its large number of stores and restaurants.
In comparison, there are many green spaces in the west of Stuttgart, for example the city’s largest forest area is also located in the west, which makes the district very diverse. The forest is home to popular excursion destinations such as the Bärenseen lakes with the Bärenschlössle castle and Solitude Palace, which was built by Duke Carl-Eugen. The Birkenkopf is also located in the forest. It was created in the post-war period by filling in rubble from the destroyed city center of Stuttgart. Today, the Birkenkopf is a popular vantage point that offers an impressive panoramic view of Stuttgart and the surrounding region. The Birkenkopf is not only a place for hiking, but also a silent monument to the history and reconstruction of Stuttgart after the war. The diversity of possibilities is reflected in the diversity of its inhabitants. The west is known as a green district not only because of its large wooded area, but also because of the green spaces in the neighborhoods. Probably the best-known green area is the Feuersee. The Feuersee serves as a central meeting point, surrounded by wide lakeside promenades. This idyllic place not only offers a picturesque backdrop with the Johanneskirche church, but also the opportunity for relaxed walks and social gatherings.
Old or young, single people or families, the west of Stuttgart inspires everyone.
Stuttgart East Stuttgart’s east is considered a rather undiscovered district, yet this district has a lot to offer.
Known for its variety of residential areas, stores and cultural offerings, this district offers a mix of urban life and green oases. The historic old buildings lend the cityscape a charming character, while modern developments and initiatives make the east a dynamic and liveable place. A well-known meeting point in the east is Ostendplatz, which is a popular meeting place with its lively atmosphere, cafés and stores. However, Stuttgart’s east is not only characterized by urban hustle and bustle, but also by green retreats. The Uhlandshöhe, with its famous observatory, allows visitors to marvel at various telescopes on guided tours. Villa Reitzenstein, the official residence of the Baden-Württemberg state government, and the surrounding park are open to the public. The mineral baths on the Neckar invite you to take a relaxing trip and have become popular destinations.
The east of Stuttgart may not have attracted all the attention yet, but its variety of offers and the successful combination of historical flair and contemporary development make it an up-and-coming and attractive district. Historic old buildings characterize the cityscape, while modern developments and initiatives make the district a dynamic and liveable place.
Conclusion
The districts of Stuttgart city center present themselves as a fascinating mix of vibrant city center and green retreats. Each district has its own charm, characterized by unique features. From the hustle and bustle of Stuttgart-Mitte to the idyllic residential areas in the other districts in the city center – Stuttgart offers something for every taste and lifestyle.
